Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical ParkBuffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park. North Platte was the hometown of the man who made the Wild West famous–William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. The legacy of the life and times of this colorful showman, army scout and buffalo hunter lives on at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park. Cody’s elegant Victorian house and huge barn reside on 25 acres of what was originally a 4,000–acre spread that Cody called Scout’s Rest Ranch. Lake Maloney State Recreation Area. The great outdoors don’t get much greater than Lake Maloney, an incredibly popular state recreation area south of North Platte. It features an enormous campground comprised of 132–acres and it is situated on a 1,000–acre lake. Facilities include 56 pads with 30 amp hookups, showers, dump station, water, boat ramps, swimming beach, picnic tables, grills and fish cleaning station. Union Pacific Railroads Bailey YardUnion Pacific Railroad’s Bailey Yard. Named in honor of former Union Pacific Railroad President Edd H. Bailey, Bailey Yard is the largest railroad classification yard in the world. This massive yard covers 2,850 acres, reaching a total length of eight miles, which is well beyond the borders of North Platte. Every 24 hours, Bailey Yard handles 10,000 railroad cars.
